If you travel on motorways often, you’ve probably heard that M-Tag is now a must. The National Highway Authority (NHA) and Motorway Police have made it compulsory for all vehicles since February 5, 2024. The main goal is simple — to make tolls faster and reduce long lines that waste time at every plaza.
Before this, M-Tag was kind of optional. You could use it if you wanted, but no one forced you. Now, you can’t really avoid it. If your vehicle doesn’t have an M-Tag, expect delays or even higher toll charges.
Why It’s Important
The M-Tag system basically works through an electronic scanner that automatically deducts the toll when you pass through the booth. No need to stop, hand over cash, or argue with anyone. It’s quicker, cleaner, and cuts out human errors or corruption.
And here’s the latest update: from February 2025, anyone without an M-Tag or with low balance will have to pay 25% more on tolls. So if you haven’t registered yet, it’s time to do it — not just for convenience, but to save money.
Benefits of M-Tag
- No long lines at toll booths.
- Less traffic jams and waiting.
- Easier travel, no cash hassle.
How to Get Your M-Tag
Getting an M-Tag is actually pretty simple. You just need to visit a registration booth (you’ll find them at M-2 toll plazas and other main entry points). Take these documents along:
- Your CNIC
- Vehicle registration book
- Driver’s license
- The registration fee
That’s it. Earlier it was free, but now there might be a small charge depending on your vehicle. Once you’re done, you’ll get a small sticker for your car, and your toll will be deducted automatically whenever you pass through.
(Note: You don’t need a COVID-19 certificate anymore — that was only required during the pandemic years.)
Where It Works
M-Tag is currently active on most major motorways — M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4, and M-5 are all included. Some newer routes, like M-8, are still being added, but most people will need it for regular travel between big cities.
Quick Tips
- Make sure your M-Tag is charged before you travel.
- Keep some extra balance to avoid issues at toll points.
- Vehicles without an M-Tag can face delays or extra tolls.
