Buying or selling a car in Pakistan has become much easier with OLX, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp deals — but with that, scammers have also found new ways to trick people. One of the most common tricks these days is the so-called “token scam.”
Here’s the thing: you see an ad for a car that looks perfect. Clean photos, low mileage, token tax cleared — and the price seems almost too good to be true. The seller usually says something like, “Bhai, urgent sale hai, I’m moving abroad” or “Need money today.” Many buyers get tempted and send money in advance to “lock the deal.” That’s where the trap closes.
Verify the Car and Seller
Never, and I mean never, send money without seeing the car yourself. Go meet the seller in a public spot — parking lots near malls or petrol pumps are safer. Ask for CNIC and compare it with the car’s registration book. If the seller starts making excuses, that’s your first red flag.
Some scammers even refuse video calls, or they’ll show you stock photos. A genuine seller won’t hesitate to flip the camera, walk around the car, and show you the number plate clearly.

Check the Records
Always use the official MTMIS website (Punjab or Sindh, depending on where the car is registered). It only takes a few seconds to type in the number plate and check if the token tax is actually paid. Don’t trust screenshots — they can be edited in Photoshop.
Watch Out for Common Tactics
Scammers thrive on pressure. They’ll say things like “Dus buyers aur interested hain” or “Bhai abhi decide karo warna gaari chali jayegi.” Remember: if the deal looks too cheap, there’s always a catch. No one sells a Honda City 2020 model for half price out of “urgency.”
Money and Safety
Don’t carry big bundles of cash to meetups. If possible, use a bank transfer in front of the seller at the time of handing over documents. And please, never send “token money” to hold a car you haven’t even seen.
If You Suspect a Scam
Stop the transaction immediately. Call your bank to freeze any payments if possible. Report the fraud to FIA’s cybercrime wing (NR3C) or PTA’s helpline (0800-55055). You can also lodge a complaint at pta.gov.pk
Final Thoughts
Car token scams are getting smarter, but honestly, they only work because people are in a hurry. Slow down, double-check everything, and don’t let “urgent sale” tactics push you into losing your hard-earned money. A little patience can save you from a very expensive mistake.
