There are four main ways to join the Pakistan Navy: as a PN Cadet for a permanent commission, through the Short Service Commission (SSC) as a graduate or professional officer, as a Sailor, or through the M Cadet scheme for medical students. They do not share one age limit, one qualification or one deadline, so pick your route first and then read its own advertisement line. The rule that runs through this whole guide is the same as in Narr's other joining guides: the current advertisement wins on every point, and this guide never claims a course is open when its registration has closed. All registration is online only, through the Pakistan Navy recruitment portal at joinpaknavy.gov.pk. Applications sent directly to Naval Headquarters are not accepted.
Open now: SSC Course 2027-A and M Cadet 12th Batch
Online registration for the Short Service Commission Course 2027-A and the M Cadet Scheme 12th Batch runs from 1 November to 22 November 2026, under advertisement PID(I)4046-D/26. Age for these courses is counted on 1 July 2027, so check your birth date against that day, not against the registration date. The SSC branches listed are Operations, Mechanical Engineering, Supply, Weapon Engineering, Ordnance, Medical, Instructor, Naval Law, Information Technology and Special Branch categories, including Marine, SSG(N) and Aviation under Operations, and Surface, Aviation and Submarine under the engineering and supply branches. Qualifications vary by branch: operations, engineering and supply branches take FSc or graduate candidates, while medical, law, education and IT branches take the matching professional degree, so read your own branch line before applying. Age limits also vary by branch, and a graduate branch and a specialist medical branch do not share one limit, so do not copy an age limit from another branch. Selected SSC officers start as Acting Sub-Lieutenant, or Acting Surgeon Lieutenant Commander for senior medical specialists, as listed for this course.
The M Cadet Scheme 12th Batch is for medical students, not graduates: candidates studying in the 4th or 5th year of MBBS as of 1 July 2027, in a PMDC recognised government medical college or special college, with a minimum of 50 percent marks in the first attempt across previous MBBS years, as listed for this batch. If you are not in 4th or 5th year MBBS on that date, this scheme is not your route: use the SSC medical branch after graduation instead.
Closed: PN Cadet Term 2027-A, for a permanent commission
PN Cadet Term 2027-A registration ran from 13 September to 11 October 2026 and has closed. Do not apply to it now, and do not treat its dates as current. Its eligibility pattern is still useful, because it shows what the next PN Cadet term will ask for, and the pattern is stable across terms. PN Cadet is for male citizens of Pakistan seeking a permanent commission in the Operations, Supply and Engineering branches, with training at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi and commissioning as Sub-Lieutenant on completion. Civilians must be unmarried and aged 16 and a half to 21 years on 15 May 2027, service candidates in uniform aged 17 to 23 years on the same date, married or unmarried. Minimum height is 5 feet 4 inches, with no height waiver stated in the advertisement material. Candidates must have passed both Matric and FSc, or O and A Level, with at least 60 percent marks, in one of these subject combinations: Physics, Maths and Chemistry; Physics, Maths and Computer Science; or Physics, Maths and Statistics. Engineering branches need Chemistry in FSc. Pre-medical students are eligible only if they qualify additional mathematics in FSc or A Level before 15 March 2027. FSc Part-II appearing candidates with at least 65 percent marks in Part-I can apply with a hope certificate from the head of their college, but they are disqualified at any stage, or discharged during training, if they fail to reach 60 percent in the final result. Wait for the next term advertisement before applying, and check it against this pattern rather than assuming it is identical.
Sailor route: the typical pattern
Sailors are the Navy's uniformed other ranks, recruited in Technical, Marine, Naval Police, Female Medical Technician, Chef and Steward, and Mechanical Transport Driver branches. The typical pattern, as listed across 2026 sailor advertisements, is Matric with science, an age range typically 16 to 20 years, extended up to 24 for Mechanical Transport Driver, unmarried status, and a minimum height of 5 feet 4 inches, with 5 feet 7 inches listed for Naval Police. Initial training takes place in Karachi, followed by professional trade training in the sailor's branch. No single sailor salary figure is stated here, because pay depends on trade, rank and allowances: see Narr's Navy salary companion for the officer starting basic pay figures by grade, and check the sailor advertisement for the current trade pattern. Sailor Batch B-2026, announced in late October 2026, is a separate advertisement from the SSC course above, so do not mix its dates with the 22 November SSC deadline.
Selection steps, in order
The typical selection pattern is online registration on joinpaknavy.gov.pk during the announced window, an intelligence and academic test at a Pakistan Navy Recruitment and Selection Centre, a preliminary medical examination and physical test, an interview, and for officer entries an ISSB stage, followed by a final medical examination and a merit list. Ineligibility rules that apply at the ISSB stage are printed with the advertisement material, so read them before you travel to a centre. A test pass does not guarantee selection: final selection follows merit and medical fitness, and the advertisement for your own course is the document that decides each step.
What it pays, in one line
Officer starting basic pay by grade is covered in Narr's Navy salary companion, built on the BPS-2026 scale: Midshipman, Sub-Lieutenant and Lieutenant sit at BPS-17, with a starting basic pay of Rs 54,140 per month, before allowances. That figure is starting basic pay, not total monthly pay, and allowances are added on top. No sailor figure is claimed here, for the trade reason given above.
