The National Highways and Motorway Police, known as NHMP or Motorway Police, is the federal force that patrols Pakistan's motorways and national highways. It began in 1997 as the Pakistan Motorway Police for the newly built M-2 motorway. In June 2001 it was given the national highways as well, starting with the N-5, and took its current name. In February 2007 it started policing the Makran Coastal Highway, the N-10. The force is headquartered in Islamabad and headed by an Inspector General of Police.
Motorway Police ranks from lowest to highest
NHMP uses its own patrol titles alongside the standard police ranks. The patrol ladder runs from Junior Patrol Officer up to Chief Patrol Officer, and above that the senior police ranks take over. In order: Junior Patrol Officer (JPO), Assistant Patrol Officer (APO), Patrol Officer (PO), Senior Patrol Officer (SPO), Chief Patrol Officer (CPO, equivalent to Deputy Superintendent of Police), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Inspector General (IG). The general police structure also lists Assistant Superintendent of Police and Additional Inspector General between these levels, which is why different guides show slightly different ladders.
Motorway Police ranks, BPS grades and starting basic pay 2026
NHMP personnel are paid on the federal Basic Pay Scales. The Finance Division revised those scales with effect from 1 July 2026 through Office Memorandum No.F.1(2)IMP/2026, dated 21 July 2026. The figures below are starting basic pay under BPS-2026. They are not total monthly salary, because allowances are added on top.
- Junior Patrol Officer (JPO), BPS-07: starting basic pay Rs 19,590 per month
- Patrol Officer (PO), BPS-14: starting basic pay Rs 27,060 per month
- Senior Patrol Officer (SPO), BPS-16: starting basic pay Rs 33,720 per month
- Chief Patrol Officer / Deputy Superintendent of Police (CPO / DSP), BPS-17: starting basic pay Rs 54,140 per month
Two grade conflicts must be stated openly. First, NHMP job advertisements list the Junior Patrol Officer at BPS-07, while several rank tables list the same post at BS-05. Second, NHMP rank tables list the Assistant Patrol Officer at BS-07 and the DIG at BS-21, while the general police structure puts a Head Constable at BPS-09 and a DIG at BPS-20. Because of these conflicts, this guide gives no single starting basic pay figure for the Assistant Patrol Officer or for the senior SSP, DIG and IG grades. Always confirm the grade printed in the advertisement you are applying against, because the advertisement is the document that decides your pay.
What the basic pay figure does not include
Actual monthly pay is higher than starting basic pay. NHMP guides list allowances including house rent, medical, conveyance, risk and uniform allowances, and the 2026 revision also grants Ad-hoc Relief Allowance 2026 at 7 percent of running basic pay. Because the exact combination depends on posting and grade, no public source can give one exact take-home figure for every NHMP post. Treat any single take-home total quoted by a job blog as an estimate, not an official figure.
How to join Motorway Police
Junior Patrol Officer is the usual entry post, with Patrol Officer recruited at the Sub-Inspector level. The usual route is: read the advertisement, apply through the official NHMP portal, pass a written test, pass the physical test, clear the interview and medical examination, and complete training at the NHMP academy. No NHMP advertisement is claimed open in this guide: check nhmp.gov.pk for the current advertisement before applying.
