The Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed Sahibzada Farhan as Pakistan's T20I captain for the three-match home series against Sri Lanka, ending Salman Ali Agha's stint as the team's shortest-format leader. The announcement came on Monday evening, ahead of Friday's series opener in Rawalpindi.
Farhan, 30, is a right-handed opening batter and Pakistan's most consistent T20I performer this year. He top-scored for Pakistan at the T20 World Cup 2026 with 383 runs at an average of 76.60, including two hundreds, at a strike rate of 160.25, according to CricketAddictor. He also recently led Pakistan to the Asian Games silver medal, where the team lost the gold-medal clash to India by 19 runs.
Salman Ali Agha has been removed from the captaincy and left out of the 15-member T20I squad altogether. He does, however, keep his place in the 16-member ODI squad for the upcoming tri-series. The PCB has not stated an official reason for the change. Several outlets report that Pakistan's underwhelming T20I run, with the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign described as the decisive factor, sits behind the decision, and describe Farhan's Asian Games leadership as the catalyst for his elevation.
Series schedule
All three T20Is will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 9, October 11 and October 13.
Pakistan T20I squad
Sahibzada Farhan (captain), Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Arafat Minhas, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay (wicketkeeper), Maaz Sadaqat, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Muhammad Imran Randhawa, Naseem Shah, Razaullah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Moqim. Several members of the squad were part of Pakistan's Asian Games campaign.
Sri Lanka name their squad
Sri Lanka have named a 15-member squad under captain Kusal Mendis for the three T20Is, built around a settled core of white-ball regulars. Senior all-rounder Dasun Shanaka is included, while fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera returns subject to a fitness clearance before the series, according to Cricket News.
Sri Lanka T20I squad: Kusal Mendis (captain, wicketkeeper), Kamil Mishara, Sineth Jayawardena, Lahiru Udara (wicketkeeper), Sahan Arachchige, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Dushmantha Chameera, Binura Fernando, Eshan Malinga, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Dunith Wellalage.
ODI setup unchanged
Shaheen Shah Afridi continues as ODI captain for the seven-match tri-series against England and Sri Lanka, and Babar Azam returns to the ODI squad. Farhan himself is not part of the ODI squad, which suggests the PCB sees his leadership brief as specific to the T20I rebuild. The tri-series runs from October 18 to October 31 in a double round-robin format, with the first three games in Rawalpindi and the remaining matches plus the final on October 31 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The series is being framed as early build-up to next year's World Cup.
Coaching staff
Mike Hesson continues as head coach, with Shaun Tait as bowling coach, Michael Smith as batting coach, Mansoor Amjad as fielding coach and Naveed Akram Cheema as team manager.
What the shakeup signals
The decision points to a generational recalibration in Pakistan's white-ball thinking. A young squad built around the Asian Games core now has a captain who earned the role through weight of runs rather than seniority. With three T20Is against Sri Lanka followed by a home tri-series, Farhan gets an immediate home run to stamp his authority before the World Cup cycle intensifies.
