The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf long march entered its seventh day on Sunday with two fresh developments shaping the story: a fact-check published today debunked a viral video attributed to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, and the party firmed up its convergence plan around Swabi Interchange, with the next phase set to begin from October 14.
Viral video declared manipulated
SochFactCheck, in a report dated October 12, concluded that a widely shared video claiming Afridi threatened military personnel in Pashto during the long march is manipulated. The fact-checkers traced the original footage to a speech posted on the PTI's official YouTube channel on October 5, in which Afridi addressed the gathering in Urdu.
Comparing the viral clip with the original, SochFactCheck found the authentic speech contained no such threatening remarks. The report says deepfake detection tools flagged the viral sample as likely synthetic, and an audio engineer analysis found signs of audio cloning in the viral clip.
The debunk matters because the clip circulated widely on Facebook and X with captions presenting it as a live Pashto address in which Afridi warned that PTI supporters would track down military personnel. SochFactCheck's conclusion is plain: in his authentic speech, Afridi spoke in Urdu, not Pashto, and made no such remarks.
The Swabi plan takes shape
Separately, the march's next steps came into focus. Addressing workers in Charsadda on Day 6 (Friday, October 9), Afridi promised the "next plan of action" at Swabi on October 13.
The route so far: the march moved from Peshawar to Charsadda on October 9, reached Mardan on October 10 and stayed there on October 11, with arrival in Swabi now set for October 12 under a revised schedule confirmed by PTI Swabi district president Sohail Yousafzai.
Afridi has directed PTI parliamentarians, office-bearers and workers to converge at Swabi Interchange on three dates: October 11 for a nationwide call, October 13 for the Peshawar, Malakand and Kohat regions, and October 14 for Hazara, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan. From October 14 onward, the next phase of the march advances from Swabi Interchange, with the route to be disclosed at that point.
Kundi's challenge, federal stance
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said he doubts the march will reach Swabi and challenged the chief minister and the provincial cabinet to resign on ethical grounds, pointing to strikes by doctors, teachers, nurses and municipal officers. The federal government, meanwhile, has ruled out concessions under pressure.
The exchange keeps the political temperature high ahead of the October 13 Swabi gathering, where Afridi is expected to announce what comes next. What that announcement contains remains to be seen; Narr will report it when it happens.
