Online and Cyber Frauds in Pakistan – How to Protect Yourself

Everything happens online nowadays. We pay bills, order food, take classes, and even run businesses with our phones. With the internet, though, life became convenient, but it also became easier for scammers to fool people.

Every week, someone loses money or personal data to an online trick. The FIA Cyber Crime Wing looks into many of these cases, but honestly, the first layer of protection is still you, your awareness, your caution.

Anything that may seem different online, just do not ignore; report and speak to a person who understands these scams and act before it's too late. Victims afterward realize that one small step could have saved them from losing everything.

1. Online Fraud

This is the most common one: nice, seemingly genuine scammers who gain your trust bit by bit. Once you send money or share personal information, they just disappear.

Always verify who you're dealing with. A few minutes of checking can save weeks of stress.

2. Identity Theft

This happens when someone uses your CNIC, photo, or documents to commit crimes or open fake accounts. Never share personal data through links or random messages. Keep your documents and pictures private, even a small leak can cause big trouble.

3. Banking or ATM Fraud

You might get a call claiming to be from your bank, asking for an OTP or PIN. Never share it. Banks never ask for that on the phone. If it happens, hang up immediately and inform your bank.

Also avoid clicking unknown links that say “verify your account” or “update information.” Those are phishing traps.

4. Online Shopping Scams

Ever ordered something online and never got it? Happens a lot. Many fake Facebook pages take advance payments and then disappear. Always check reviews or choose cash on delivery. If a deal looks unreal, it probably is.

5. Fake Prize Messages

“Congratulations! You won a car or cash prize!”, we’ve all seen those. They’ll ask for your details or a small fee to “process” your prize. Don’t fall for it. No company gives prizes out of nowhere.

6. Employment or Visa Scams

A number of people who desire to work abroad fall prey to the frauds presented by fake agents. They demand huge sums as advance and promise quick visas or overseas work. Always confirm from the embassy or official sources before paying someone.

7. Revenge Porn & Exploitation

It is a serious offense to share private photos or videos of someone without consent. If you are or if anyone else is being blackmailed like this, inform FIA Cyber Crime Wing and they can take legal actions on privacy complaints.

8. Phishing & Fake Websites

Some fake websites look exactly like real bank or government pages. Always verify the web address; usually, all official web addresses start with “https://” or end with “.gov.pk.” If it is suspicious, close the page and do not fill in any of your details.

9. Investment & Crypto Scams

Be careful with “double profit” or “quick money” offers. Most of these are just fancy scams. Do your research before investing. Real opportunities never pressure you to act fast.

10. Fake Charities or NGOs Scams

After every flood, earthquake, or tragedy, the same scammers show up online, 'collecting donations'. One should always verify charity pages before sending money across.

Other Common Online Crimes:

• Data Theft: Hacking or stealing private data from mobiles and computers.
• Cyber Harassment: To threaten somebody or embarrassment through abusive posts.
• Fake News & Hate Speech: Sharing any false stories or hate content.
• Impersonation Accounts: Using someone's name or picture to deceive others.
• Deepfakes, Hawala, Hundi, and Ponzi Schemes: Old scams that have just gone digital.
